History
The Institute of Mental Health (IMH), the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Peking University (also known as the School of Mental Health, Peking University), is an integrated center for teaching, research and psychiatric service. It is designated by World Health Organization as WHO / Beijing Mental Health Collaborating Center for Research and Training and by Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China-CDC) as the National Center for Mental Health.
Mental health specialty of Peking University was founded in 1942 as the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, School of Medicine, Peking University. From 1942 to 1953 the director was Professor Xu Yingkui, a nationally famous neurologist and psychiatrist.
In 1951, a mental hospital affiliated with the First Teaching Hospital of Peking University was founded. The department of psychiatry responsible for teaching and research was established in 1954. From 1953 to 1972, the director was Professor Wu Zhengyi, a nationally famous psychiatrist.
From that time, several research units were developed, such as the Unit of Neuroelectrophysiology in 1954 and the Unit of Psychobiochemistry in 1962.
In 1966, the Mental Hospital and the Department of Psychiatry were moved to the Third Teaching Hospital of Beijing Medical College. Professor Shen Yucun was the director from 1973 to 1980.
In March 1980, the Institute of Mental Health of Beijing Medical College was established. Professor Shen Yucun, an internationally famous psychiatrist, served as the director from 1980 to 1997.
On February 26, 1982 the Institute was designated by the World Health Organization as WHO / Beijing Mental Health Collaborating Center for Research and Training.
In February 1987, the Chinese Mental Health Journal was formally issued and affiliated with the Institute.
On October 6, 1992 the Institute moved into a new building and it was entitled the Sixth Hospital of Beijing Medical University.
In 1993, the National Key Laboratory for Mental Health was founded by the Ministry of Health in the Institute.
In 1997, the Sixth Hospital of Beijing Medical University was certified at the top level of psychiatric hospitals. Professor Cui Yuhua was the director of the Institute and Hospital from 1997 to 2001.
In 1998, the Base for Drug Clinical Trial was funded by the Ministry of Health in the Institute.
In April 2000, Peking University and Beijing Medical University merged, and was named Peking University. The Institute and Hospital were renamed Institute of Mental Health and the Sixth Hospital of Peking University.
From March 2001 to July 2004, Dr. Yu Xin, a consultant psychiatrist, served as executive director of the Institute and Hospital.
In December 2001, the Base for Chinese National Continuing Medical Education in Psychiatry was founded by the Ministry of Health in the Institute.
In June 2002, the Institute was designated as the National Center for Mental Health, China-CDC.
In July 2002, the Clinical Psychology Center of Peking University was set up in the Institute.
In December 2004, the Institute was entitled the School of Mental Health of Peking University.
In July 2004, new directors of the Institute and Hospital were nominated by Peking University.
